Hierbei wurde u. a.

ecosign x Dolphin Watch Alliance – Educational Trip to El Gouna, Egypt

In the summer semester 2021, a successful cooperation project was carried out with the Dolphin Watch Alliance in El Gouna, Egypt, on the topic of Sustainable Dolphin Tourism. This non-profit organisation, led by marine biologist Angela Ziltener, works together with the University of Zurich and the El Gouna Campus to protect wild dolphins in the Red Sea, which was also the topic of our course.

In the joint semester project, the focus was on the sustainable goals of Dolphin Watch Alliance – to support the conservation of dolphins, which is endangered by tourism. The Red Sea is very popular as an outstanding diving destination and, among other things, because of programs such as "Swimming with Dolphins". Dolphins hunt at night and profit-oriented tourism massively disturbs the animals' resting phases and social life during the day, thus threatening their existence. Species conservation is fundamental to the functioning of the oceans, which produce 70% of our oxygen, and is thus also of utmost importance to humans. For this reason, the NGO team has developed a Code of Conduct in cooperation with the Egyptian authorities, which contains behavioural instructions for tour providers, boat drivers and crew members as well as for tourists in order to protect the animals. In the semester project ecosign students developed ideas and concepts on how and through which media the Code of Conduct should be communicated with the aim to achieve respectful treatment of dolphins in the tourism industry and among tourists. Parts of the project results, such as the redesign of the Dolphin Watch Alliance logo, a new brochure as well as the relaunch of the website and the social media presence are currently being implemented.

In order to advance the project ideas and concepts even further, all those involved considered it necessary for the students to get a real picture of dolphin tourism during an educational trip on site. The designers should not only study the behaviour of the dolphins within two research days at sea, but above all get to know and understand the interests and behaviour of the tour providers, boat operators and tourists in their cultural environment. During the stay, there was also an excursion into the desert with the provider El Gouna Mountain Goats. Among other things, contact was made with the local Bedouins in order to introduce the students to the special culture of the nomadic desert dwellers.

The stay was organised by Dolphin Watch Alliance and was made possible thanks to committed supporters: The Sawiris Foundation, Orascom El Gouna and the El Gouna Campus provided the students with free accommodation for the entire week in a student dormitory, a day on campus with insights into the current state of dolphin research and two educational days at sea with Dolphin Watch Alliance and Orca Diving. In addition, the group received a generous scholarship to support travel costs from Fresenius University of Applied Sciences from DAAD project funding.

In future cooperation it will be discussed how the perception of the Alliance can be further strengthened and how the existing concepts can be transferred and further developed for the protection of other species. The perspective goal is to steer tourism in the long term in new directions that include a respectful treatment of nature and species conservation. The aim is to create a win-win situation for all stakeholders (customer, provider and environment) in the field of sustainable wildlife tourism.

This educational trip in the summer of 2022 laid the foundation for further cooperation and we would like to thank all those involved - especially the initiator Angela Ziltener - for this unique opportunity and look forward to contributing to species conservation!
